Musher Question & Answer

How many years have you been running dogs?
20

Tell us about your dogs?
My main leader is Maddie - she ran about 500 miles in single lead to get us to the finish of the 2015 Quest - she had a litter of pups last fall and so missed last winter's racing - and we really missed her. The majority of our team (8 dogs) come from breeding between Kraken's Kermit the Frog and a bitch that came with us from the UK's Penkhala's Medea - these dogs now have 32 thousand mile finishes between them, all of them have done the Quest/Iditarod double at least once (five have done it twice) and 8 of them were on the first Siberian team to finish the double in 2015. One dog, Loonie, has run every mile of every race I have done since 2011. One dog, Max has his own fan club, Facebook page and massive ego.

How did you get started running dogs?
Just as a hobby and a way to exercise dogs, although I think drugs may have become involved somewhere along the line.

What do you love most about running sled dogs?
Being out on my own out in the wilderness with just the dogs for company.

Are you a member of any other organizations involved in sled dog sports?
Siberian Huskey Club of Great Britain

Why did you enter the Yukon Quest? What are your goals for the race?
It is such an amazing race, just like a big family reunion. To try to improve whilst having fun and 'enjoying' the trail.

What music do you listen to on the trail?
None, I don't have the patience to deal with an iPod and a parka.

How did your dogs get their names?/ How do you choose names?
We try to choose names that amuse us in some way and if the names annoy others all the better. Louise and I argue about who's turn it is to name litters. We try to pick a theme for a litter and then come up with names. We have more names than we have years left in dogs.
