Shaw Direct is pleased to join the Yukon Quest as the Official Dawson City Checkpoint Sponsor during the 2016 Yukon Quest 1,000 Mile International Sled Dog Race.
The 33rd annual race kicks off Feb. 6, 2016 and follows dog sled routes established at the turn of the 20th century from Fairbanks, Alaska to Whitehorse, Yukon. The Dawson City checkpoint marks the midway point of the race, and due to the mandatory 36-hour layover, it is a hub of activity for the teams, race officials, volunteers and media.
“With the mandatory 36-hour layover, there are a lot of logistics that come into play once the race reaches Dawson City,” says Natalie Haltrich, Yukon Quest Executive Director – Yukon. “The halfway point is a good time for the teams to rest, so that they can be as fresh as possible for the back half of the race, and we greatly value Shaw Direct’s support and contribution.”
All Yukon Quest sled dogs receive at least one complete physical exam by the veterinary team during their rest in Dawson City to ensure they are fit to continue the race. In addition, the layover also gives the dog handlers a chance to train and exercise their team’s dogs.
Shaw Direct is, one of Canada’s leading satellite TV providers, offering the most HD channels in Canada, endless entertainment options and premium bundles tailored to all viewers.
“Initiatives that highlight the magnificence of Canada’s North are important in their ability to connect people to our country’s rich culture,” said Philippe Sicotte, Vice-President, Shaw Communications Inc. “The Yukon Quest is a prime example of a long-standing tradition that brings together the entire community, and we are honoured to be participating in this event as the Dawson City checkpoint sponsor.”
