July 9th, 2012 - Yukon Quest Announces New Executive Director in Yukon
Whitehorse, YT – Whitehorse resident Marie-Sylvestre Belanger is hired as Executive Director of the Whitehorse office.
After working 3 years as Operations Manager for the Yukon Quest, Belanger has accepted the position following the departure of Sue Thomas last April. Besides having comprehensive knowledge and experience of the race and its stakeholders, Belanger completed an MSc in Responsible Tourism Management and has worked for a year in Churchill, Manitoba at the Churchill Northern Studies Centre as the Program Coordinator.
“This upcoming race is a milestone for the Yukon Quest as we will celebrate 30 years of racing. The boards and staff have already been working hard at the planning of the event, and I am excited to step up to the challenge and take the reins on the Yukon side. Over the past three years I have worked closely with the participants, communities, volunteers and sponsors, and can’t wait to take on this bigger role in the organisation.”
“The Yukon Board of Directors is really glad Marie Belanger accepted the position of Executive Director and unanimously supports her decision. We are all looking forward to continue working together with her and we are certain she will be successful in her new role in the Yukon Quest organization. She has both hands-on and organizational experience, having worked as Operations Manager the past three years and as interim Executive Director since last April. That is a huge benefit, as that will mean a smooth and fast transition. Another milestone on our path to the 30th race!” said Joost van der Putten, returning President of the Yukon Board.
