How did your kennel get its name?
I had a rough and stressful year in 2016/2017, losing a couple of dogs, separation, had to give up my retirement, go back to work, was uncertain of the future and it was a very lonely time for me. January 25, 2017, I lost my 7 year old Timber to illness and I came home to 6 six month old puppies and the other 12 dogs, feeling alone and devastated. I was greeted by all of my dogs in such a way that it gave me a hope and then knew our kennel name had to be BFF Siberians (corny as it may sound it felt so right).
How did you get started running dogs?
Adopted a husky cross puppy from the SPCA, learned about Siberian huskies and skijoring and found I loved the Siberian husky traits so I needed more, and loved skijoring, bikejoring, and then when I had enough dogs, moved on to the sled.
What do you love most about dog sledding?
I always loved being outdoors, the connection formed with the dogs on the trail, the peaceful feeling I can get from running with them and that it is always an adventure with them.
Please share any interesting stories or facts about your dogs that will be running in the 2024 race:
Had a litter of 6 dogs in 2016 and they should all be running together with their mom and maybe their dad.
Are you a member of any other organizations in sled dog sports?
Why did you enter the 2024 Yukon Quest and what are your goals for the race?
Just to enjoy ourselves and the experience on the trail.
Do you listen to music on the trail? If so, what types?
Mostly alternative when I do listen to music, and sometimes nothing
How did your dogs get their names?
Some of the dogs already had names when I got them, some were just names randomly picked that I liked for that particular dog. In July 2016, I had an accidental litter of 6 puppies (accidental in the timing of the litter). This was a few months after I was separated and uncertain of our future and my son and his wife suggested a “New Beginnings” themed litter which I found very fitting. So we ended up with Freedom, Adventure (Addy), Independence (Indy), Solitude (Sol), Perseverance (Percy), and Tranquility (Quill).
